Office Visits

Initial Examination

At your first visit to our office, Dr.Steiman spends approximately 30 minutes discussing your main concerns about your teeth and bite. Dr. Steiman examines your teeth, gums, and jaws, and the way that the teeth fit together for any irregularities. Afterwards, there is a lengthy discussion outlining the various treatment options, treatment time, cost of treatment, and payment arrangements. Any questions that you or a parent has are addressed at this time. A nominal fee is charged for an examination at Dr. Steiman's office, but it is often covered by regular dental insurance. Some simple, important forms, such as a medical/dental history, will be completed just before the examination. Our friendly, courteous front desk staff can help you with any concerns that you have regarding these forms or the examination itself.

Diagnostic Records

If treatment is needed, then diagnostic records must be taken in order to study your case further and customize the best treatment plan possible. Diagnostic records consist of plaster models of the teeth, digital photographs of the face and teeth, and X-rays of the teeth and jaws. These records provide Dr. Steiman with invaluable information that is not available at the initial examination. All of Dr. Steiman's records are taken in-house which minimizes the need to travel to other professional offices.

Treatment Conference

Once Dr.Steiman has completed analyzing the diagnostic records and formulating the ideal treatment plan, a follow-up appointment is scheduled. During this 30-minute appointment, Dr. Steiman will present his findings and treatment plan in detail using models and videos so that you fully understand how he and his staff will create a beautiful, healthy smile. There is plenty of time to answer any questions that may arise. Final cost for your case is discussed as well. Once everyone is comfortable with the treatment plan, appointments are set up to get your devices placed on the teeth.

Appointments and Scheduling

It takes approximately 45-60 minutes to properly place orthodontic devices (braces, overbite correctors, expanders) in the mouth. It may take more than one appointment as well. After this, you will visit our office every four to six weeks for regular adjustment appointments where the orthodontic devices will be checked and activated to ensure that they are working as effectively as possible without discomfort. These adjustment appointments are generally ten minutes long.

Dr. Steiman's daily computerized schedule has been set up to enable him and his staff to see as many patients as possible each day. In order to achieve this, shorter adjustment appointments are reserved for the more demanding before- and after-school hours. Longer appointments for procedures, such as placing or removing orthodontic devices, new patient examinations, and treatment conferences are performed between 9am and 3pm. Dr. Steiman and his staff pride themselves by staying on time, all the time! We respect the fact that your time is just as valuable as ours. We ask that patients arrive for their appointments on time and if a cancellation is necessary, please notify our office as soon as possible. That way, another patient may benefit from that appointment time. Emergency appointments can alter our daily schedule slightly, but every effort is made to see emergency patients at a time when the disruption will be minimal.

Finally, Dr. Steiman is happy to discuss your progress during your regular adjustment appointment. However, if a longer discussion is required, then a separate appointment will be made. This way, Dr. Steiman can give his full attention to the matter at hand by addressing your needs in a private setting without being pulled away to examine other active patients.

Fees, Payment Options, and Insurance

The cost of treatment depends on the severity of the patient's problem. This is reflected in the amount of time and devices that are needed to create a beautiful, healthy smile for the patient. Since finances should not be a barrier to having a wonderful smile, Dr. Steiman will discuss the various payment options available at our office before any devices are placed in a patient's mouth.

Payment Arrangements

In order to keep the cost of orthodontics within reach of anyone who desires it, but still maintaining the highest level of professional care, our office has created some useful payment options:

  • Individualized payment plans can be set up to suit an individual's budget. These payment plans are interest free and extend over many months during the treatment and retention period.
  • If payment is made in full at the onset of treatment, we offer a professional "accounting" courtesy discount.
  • For your convenience, payments may be made with post-dated cheques, debit card, Visa, or Mastercard. Indivdualized payment processing dates can easily be arranged to suit your needs.
  • It is important to note that any arranged payment schedule is completely separate from the frequency of adjustment appointments. Payments are made on a monthly basis, but a patient may attend Dr. Steiman's office more than once in a given month.

If you have orthodontic benefits, then we are more than happy to provide you with a Certified Orthodontic Standard Information (pre-determination) Form. This form is completed properly after diagnostic records are taken and is given to you at the Treatment Conference appointment.

Insurance companies require submission of a receipt in order to reimburse the patient/parent directly. As such, patients must make payments directly at our office and submit their receipts to their insurance companies afterwards. Our front desk staff is happy to explain this simple process and familiarize the patient/parent with the use of the pre-determination form. However, our goal is to focus most of our attention to the treatment needs of the patient and therefore, we cannot submit receipts on the patient's/parent's behalf. Benefit coverage information can be obtained by phoning the insurance carrier. Unfortunately, with the current privacy laws, our staff cannot assist you in this area.

Although most insurance companies have orthodontic benefits, they usually do not cover the entire cost of orthodontic treatment. The percentage and maximum benefit will vary between employers. Amounts not covered by insurance may be claimable as a Major Medical Expense on your taxes. We are happy to provide income tax receipts for a patient at any time, however, we suggest that you consult with your financial advisor as to the individual qualifications.
